When monitoring is required in a dangerous location such as a live carriageway, ensuring safety is paramount. Holme Moss, a remote hillside site, benefited from Sight Automation’s remote monitoring solution, provided by Central Alliance (CA), enhancing data frequency for the client and boosting staff safety.

CA, with in-house monitoring and instrumentation brand Sight Automation, delivered multi-disciplinary services for our client, Kirklees Council and designer JBA Consulting, to provide monitoring of a remote hillside road prone to landslip at Holme Moss on the Yorkshire to Derbyshire border. The work comprised the completion of a ground investigation, to facilitate monitoring of an area of road highlighted as a risk.

CA and Sight Automation installed an In-Place Inclinometer, which was specified to target different depths of interest to provide movement data, and three Vibrating Wire Piezometers to measure pressure under the carriageway. The onsite works were completed in 2022, and decommissioned in 2023, after a year of successful remote monitoring for Kirklees Council.

The works comprised of using traffic management to allow for a safe working environment for CA to drill 12No. boreholes into the carriageway and working alongside other RSK companies within the group, to assist with trenching for the telemetry cables to be fed to the roadside. At the roadside, electrical enclosures provided protection for our telemetry which allowed the nodes to communicate with a central gateway to forward all data back to the online portal. The portal was provided by through CA’s in-house instrumentation and monitoring brand Sight Automation.

Data was returned at an hourly interval and could be accessed by the client at any time. This method significantly outperformed alternative traditional monitoring options, not only by increasing the frequency of data collection, but also by enhancing safety. It reduced the need for revisits to a remote site, eliminating the requirement for manual monitoring near or on a live carriageway, and reduced costs associated with traffic management. Additionally, our client benefited by reducing the CO2 emissions related to their project by stopping multiple return visits travelling to and from site to collect data.

An IPI set out at Holme Moss, Kirklees, with the hills and a blue cloudy sky in the background.
