Key Project Details
Location: Preston
Client: Jacobs
Sector: Rail
Contract Value: £250,000
Services: Ground Investigation, Topographical Survey, Utility Surveys, CCTV and Drainage Surveys, Vegetation Clearance, Possession Planning and Safe System of Work Planning
Central Alliance (CA), under the banner of RSK Environment, delivered multi-disciplinary Survey services for our client Jacobs, to facilitate the design and build of a new station at Cottam Parkway, Preston. The work comprised the completion of off and on-track Ground Investigation (GI), Topographical, Utility, Drainage and CCTV surveys.
Works were completed in collaboration with the Client and Principal Designer – Jacobs Uk, with CA (part of the RSK Group), undertaking Principal Contractor duties, including possession and access planning, and production of the necessary safety documentation for railway working.
Prior to the commencement of works, CA completed possession planning and submitted a Construction Phase Plan taking on the role of Principal Contractor for the works.
A pre-start Work Package and Construction Phase Plan briefing ensured all operatives attending site were aware of site restrictions, working locations where key project risks were identified and mitigated.
Prior to the works commencing, access point improvement works were completed to improve the vehicle access point at Lea Road for our works, and any subsequent works on site. These works comprised the removal of fly-tipped waste and placement of Type 2 to improve the access point for works vehicles.
Topographical and Utility surveys were completed over 1.2 miles of track, embankment, and cutting with associated vegetation clearance, also completed by competent internal staff.
Topographical and track survey works provided validation of previously completed surveys, plus re-establishment non-compliant survey control, and extended survey coverage of the embankment slopes, line side areas and high/low mileage track alignment. Survey works were undertaken in accordance with NR/L2/TRK/3100, using a combination of conventional total station and terrestrial scanning observations, with Lasersweep technology used to record structure gauging at bridge locations within the worksite.
Utility surveys were completed on and off track using GPR and EM methods to establish the presence of any unchartered services, in accordance with PAS128.
CCTV, Jetting and Drainage surveys were completed by Geocore, in order to establish the drainage layout, with blockages removed from the existing track drainage releasing water from the catch pit drainage system.
GI works comprised the completion of 4No. Cable Percussive boreholes, 36 deep ABS locations, 36 Dynamic Sampling and Dynamic Probing locations completed using a combination of tracked and modular drilling rigs. Additional services were provided by RSK sister companies including Dynamic Sampling UK Ltd, Geocore, JB Site Investigations and Envirolab. Acoustic fencing was provided in order to mitigate noise pollution to nearby residential properties.
Works on-track were supervised by our internal CoSS and site supervisors, and completed over five 27-hour weekend blockades, shifts were split into two twelve hour weekend shifts in order to maximise productivity with between 30-40 members of staff attending site each weekend. Works were completed to programme, with no recorded incidents or noise complaints.
