Innovation is essential to Central Alliance as it enables safer, more sustainable, and more cost‑effective solutions to increasingly complex ground and infrastructure challenges. Advances in digital design, data analytics, monitoring technologies, and construction methods improve our understanding of ground behaviour, reduce uncertainty, and enhance risk management. As demands grow from urbanisation, climate resilience, and carbon reduction, innovation allows engineers to optimise designs, minimise environmental impact, and extend the life of assets while maintaining the highest standards of safety and performance.
Research & Development
At Central Alliance, we are not satisfied with being reliant on standard practice. We strive towards developing new practice, and lead to make sure it happens. Innovation is the answer to the global climate crisis, and the global energy crisis. We must contribute by innovating in the fields that we specialise in, whilst making operations safer and more efficient.
The Climate Crisis
Our innovations support a move towards changing the way that we do things, to the benefit of the environment. Remote sensing, rapid data capture, non-intrusive techniques and in-place monitoring are key to our future by reducing both our and our clients’ carbon footprint. Our focus is also on helping our clients measure and address asset resilience to climate change. Our remote sensing and GIS analysis helps to proactively prioritise and identify assets prone to climate change impact. Through data provision, we can help our clients meet Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) requirements while on the journey to net zero.
Sustainability
Our site operations are moving towards more sustainable methods of operation, using battery powered equipment, electric vehicles and alternative fuels. We have a significant CAPEX plant replacement programme to meet changing emissions standards to keep an updated and modern fleet of drilling rigs and plant, and are reducing transport and plant movements.
We have developed a sustainability matrix that enables us to score proposed ground investigation works and compare to actual, enabling comparisons to be made between different specifications and scopes, highlighting the more sustainable options and informing on where we need to make our operations more sustainable.
Our broader, longer term strategy is to revolutionise the way that we operate and incorporate innovative solutions such as muon tomography, remote monitoring and remote sensing.
Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs)
Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs), originated by NASA in the 1970s, are a method for estimating the maturity of technologies during the acquisition phase of a program.
TRLs enable consistent and uniform discussions of technical maturity across different types of technology, utilising a scale from 1 to 9 where each level represents a stage in the development lifecycle of a technology – from basic research to full commercial application.
TRLs help us work with our partners and clients to provide a common language to compare technologies. They help all parties make informed investments, develop deicisions and mitigate risk.
On the right, you will see our interactive TRL scale. Technologies and innovations that Central Alliance is working on and have worked on, are listed below with the associated TRL stage.
