“I’d say the environment here is very growth-orientated, with a strong focus on fostering new starters and helping them to progress”
You've very recently joined us at Central Alliance, can you tell me a little about your background?
I started with CA in March this year, having graduated from the University of Liverpool with an archaeology degree in 2024. I had no previous survey work experience before joining CA.
What made you apply for a role at CA?
Central Alliance was recommended to me through some friends who spoke highly of the supportive working atmosphere here.
What is the work environment like at CA?
I’d say the environment here is very growth-orientated, with a strong focus on fostering new starters or those with limited experience, helping them to progress. I really appreciate the friendly and supportive team.
Can you give an overview of what the survey & geomatics department that you work in does, and how your role fits into this?
My department undertakes a range of surveying solutions for clients it’s actually been quite eye-opening for me, learning about the various surveying techniques that we offer – from topographic, utility, drainage, aerial, building, rail and track surveys and more!
My work primarily involves land surveying, which often includes the use of advanced 3D laser scanning technology to capture detailed spatial data of highways, railways and surrounding infrastructure. The objective is to support infrastructure development and aid in environmental planning through accurate and up-to-date geospatial information. Additionally, my role may also involve surveying underground utilities such as water, gas and electrical lines to help in the planning stage.
Are there any limitations to your job?
At times, accessing certain sites can be challenging due to remote locations or limited entry points. Some tasks may also require working in confined spaces, but only if you’re comfortable with them. CA always provide the correct training beforehand, so I always feel safe at work.
How would you say CA has helped you transition from university to working life?
Rather than setting rigid expectations, I was given achievable goals to work towards which helped me develop at a comfortable and steady pace. Learning on the job and gaining practical experience has significantly enhanced my understanding of the industry and deepened my technical knowledge.
What advice would you give to anyone starting out with us, or starting out in the world of work?
I would recommend taking the time to fully understand the responsibilities of your role, so you are better prepared. I would also say don’t hesitate to ask questions or actively engage with your team, as building these connections early on can really improve your overall experience.
