“I really enjoy the freedom of the role, plus the variety of work, which makes it non-repetitive”
What does your job role entail?
My job involves preparing various instrumentation and monitoring equipment such as divers, which are used for groundwater work to help monitor any land failures. My most recent job on site was fitting divers at Bullockstone Bridge in Kent.
What is your background, did you have any previous industry experience before starting with us?
I graduated from Leeds Beckett University with a Civil Engineering degree. No, I did not have any previous industry-based work experience before commencing as a Graduate Engineer with Central Alliance in 2024.
What do you love most about working at Central Alliance?
I really enjoy the freedom of the role, plus the variety of work, which makes it non-repetitive. This allows for continuous learning which helps to expand my skill set.
Do you feel there are any challenging aspects of the job?
I’d say the long travel times when I am working across the country can be somewhat challenging, however we do get a company vehicle to travel in, and our travel time is during paid working hours. I think it’s a matter of getting used to working throughout the country and being away from home in the week at times throughout the year.
“It’s been great to be exposed to seeing large projects materialise from pre-contract to site work”
What made you apply for a role at CA?
My role is in an aspiring field to work within, and as mentioned, I like the variety of work and being outdoors for much of it. Also, when I am not working away across the country, the office in Wakefield is close to home.
How does working for CA help to build your knowledge of the ground engineering industry?
It’s been great to be exposed to seeing large projects materialise from pre-contract to site work. Also, the role helps with learning about new monitoring technology, for example muon tomography and the application of data collection.
What is the working environment like at CA?
I would say the environment has a friendly nature that is easy going and has a relaxed manner.
Is there any advice you would give to anyone starting out in the industry?
Pay attention to the small things that are being taught to you and take notes on site to build muscle memory.
