BSc. Geology from the University of Durham

Engineer: Ground Investigation

“My main jobs are to provide detailed logging of soil and rock cores, as well as supervising drilling operations on-site, to ensure that all investigation work is carried out safely and accurately”

Can you tell us a little about your background?

I graduated with a geology degree from Durham University in 2023. After graduating, I worked at a smaller geotechnical company for ten months, before joining Central Alliance in July 2024.

Can you give us an overview of what the ground investigation department that you work within does, and how your role fits into this?

My department plays a vital role in understanding ground conditions before any major construction or infrastructure project begins. This can involve methods such as drilling to collect soil and rock samples. After collection, we then log the soil and rock and send off for any laboratory testing that the client may require.

My main jobs are to provide detailed logging of soil and rock cores, as well as supervising drilling operations on-site, to ensure that all investigation work is carried out safely and accurately.

What do you love most about working at Central Alliance?

I really appreciate the close-knit, family-like environment among colleagues, which creates a positive and supportive atmosphere to work in.

Are there any challenges at work?

One limitation of the job is the unpredictable weather conditions across the UK, which can at times make site work challenging.

“The role has helped to build my confidence by giving me regular opportunities to communicate with a wide range of professionals across the industry”

How does CA improve your personal development?

The role has helped to build my confidence by giving me regular opportunities to communicate with a wide range of professionals across the industry.

How does CA build on your knowledge in the industry?

The role offers a wide variety of tasks, such as rock logging, which has introduced me to new methods, allowing me to continually develop my skills and improve my technical expertise.

What is the working environment like at CA?

At the start, the work environment has more manageable expectations, which helps to encourage gradual improvement and continuous learning. This allows individuals to build confidence and ask questions without any fear. As you become more experienced and more competent in your role, your responsibilities increase, but always with support when needed.

What are three pieces of advice you would give to anyone starting out in the industry?

Firstly, take the time to listen carefully and learn techniques from experienced engineers. Don’t hesitate to ask for feedback, as it’s essential for growth and improvement. Lastly, look after your gear because the gear looks after you.
