SUSTAINABILITY

Environment, Sustainability & Governance (ESG)

Central Alliance is aligned with the RSK Group 2030 Sustainability Strategy known as Second Nature. As our business continues to grow, the way we approach and govern sustainability is also evolving, to ensure we fully understand and act on our collective impacts in the most effective way, ensuring we meeting evolving regulatory and stakeholder requirements.

Second Nature reflects our ambition to mainstream sustainability, so it simply becomes the instinctive way we operate across the business, our value chain and beyond. Second Nature is built around five core themes, which reflect the responsibilities that we owe as a business to our widest group of stakeholders – our people, our value chain, society and the environment – and how these are supported by appropriate finance and governance structures.

Central Alliance has worked towards creating a more sustainable way of working. We acknowledge the industry we work in has often been percieved as one that is ‘traditional’ and will struggle with the modern age; however, we believe we have an opportunity to do more, and Central Alliance can become an industry leader in innovative solutions for some of the worlds most challenging issues.

Our remote monitoring service is an innovation in sustainability. By installing remote nodes into slopes, embankments, and railway cuttings instead of manual inclinometers and VWPs, the service has led to an average reduction of carbon emmisions of 43%. This large decrease in emmisions is primarily due to the reduction in travelling required to monitor the projects – remote monitoring means that there are less people on site.

What we've done

In FY26, Central Alliance completed all of the KPIs set our by Second Nature for the years, this included the following:

  1. We conducted four EDI / Wellbeing awareness-raising activities which included undertaking toolbox talks on gender-inclusive language for Pride month and doing a company-wide campaign on understanding mental health that coincided with World Mental Health Awareness Day in October.
  2. We adopted a green energy tariff in both of our office locations, in Wakefield and Normanton, to ensure that we are working in a more sustainable location and reducing carbon emissions.
  3. We managed to get 100% of our procurement personnel through their sustainable procurement training, ensuring that we have oversight and understanding of our supply chain.
  4. We pushed out an employee commuting survey to all staff members, which had a response rate of over 80%. The findings of the survey will help build a better understanding of how our team commute to work.
  5. We ensured that 100% of all Line Managers within the business completed their Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) training which included modules on topics such as bias and discrimination.

Recycling for Biodiversity!

A small effort towards encouraging recycling of equipment and biodiversity in workspaces.

Recycling Aged Hard-Hats to become Decorated Planters

We actively encourage PPE recycling at Central Alliance and have two PPE recycling bins at both of our premises, however; we thought it might be a good opportunity to try something different with an item that usually only has one purpose. We got three hard hats back from the children of colleagues who had spent time decorating them over the spring break so it was not only a sustainable activity but a fun one to get children interested in how we can recycle and reuse equipment.

AGS Sustainability Charter

Central Alliance officially joined the Association of Geotechnical & Geoenvironmental Specialists (AGS) Sustainability Charter in September 2025, a powerful step forward in commitment to building a more sustainable future. The Charter provides a practical framework for embedding sustainability into our operations, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As part of this commitment, we will:

  • Identify key operational areas impacting sustainability
  • Measure environmental, social, and economic impacts
  • Set clear, measurable targets
  • Implement strategies for improvement and training
  • Monitor progress continuously
  • Promote sustainability across our supply chain
  • Share knowledge and best practices with the wider industry

By joining this initiative, we’re not only reducing our environmental footprint, we’re helping lead the way toward a more resilient and responsible geotechnical and geoenvironmental sector. We’re excited to collaborate with fellow AGS members and drive meaningful change across the industry.
